If you are expecting, plan to be in the future or know someone that is, here are some common Prepartum symptoms!

Low back pain- Foot and back pain are due to hormonal and musculoskeletal changes. Studies have shown that 40% to 60% of women will experience back pain during pregnancy and as many as 25% experience temporarily disabling pain.

Sacroiliac joint pain, pubic symphysis dysfunction, tailbone pain- In an article Fiani et. al (2021), sacroiliac joint dysfunction (SIJD), also known as pelvic girdle pain (PGP) affects up to half of pregnant women.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI)- In an article by Sangsawang & Sangsawang (2013), the “mean prevalence of SUI during pregnancy was 41% (18.6 – 60%) and increased with gestational age.” It also stated that pelvic floor muscle exercises are safe and effective for treating SUI during pregnancy, as it did not have significant adverse effects.

Additionally, the authors stated that 54.3% of women will have SUI that is detrimental to their quality of life and pregnancy is the main risk factor for this.

Sciatica nerve pain- Tightness and pain in the legs is due to the flattening of the feet.

Tx for Prepartum Symptoms

Pregnant people may experience various symptoms related to their changing bodies and hormones.

Pelvic floor physical therapy can help symptoms such as low back, hip, sciatic and foot pain. It can also help with constipation and urinary dysfunction. People are told the symptoms are ‘because you are pregnant’ – PT can STILL help despite an advancing pregnancy and people should seek help. Manual therapy and a home exercise program are often the solution.

Many people find a reduction in hip and sacro-iliac joint pain with sacro-iliac joint belts.

Compression garments can help reduce lower extremity swelling and tired legs!
